Forest Trip 3

What a lovely day it was for a trip to the forest - nice and warm and the sun was shining!

As always we began with finding our wild place and sat quietly enjoying it, listening to noises around us and looking to see if anything had changed.

We were working in four groups today and rotating round four different stations; using storm kettles, filming 'Bear Hunt', senses game, creating a character and litter picking.

Storm Kettles
Scott who is Edinburgh's outdoor development officer came to teach us how to use storm kettles to make yummy hot chocolate. He was helped by Abbi and we had great fun collecting small twigs to start the little fire needed to heat the water and then needed to collect bigger twigs to keep it going. Scott made it in to a little competition to see who boil their water first.

Senses Game
Miss McArthur was encouraging groups to use their senses and think of descriptive sentences they could write about what they saw, heard, touched and smelt.

Create a character
Theresa and Linda with their groups were conserving the forest area by collecting litter to keep it clean, tidy and protected. The groups also had to use something in the forest (tree, leaf, rock) to create characters using a nose, eyes and mouth.

Bear Hunt
Mrs McCafferty's groups were filming 'Going on a bear hunt' to help with the nursery/P1 transition project. Hopefully there will be some video footage of this in another blog...

Forest Trip 2

Another fantastic trip to our wild place, this time focusing on our senses.

We found our wild places once again and were able to settle down much quicker to listen and watch what was going on around us.

Our first activity was to be guided to a tree and then use our sense of touch to feel the tree, all the time with our eyes closed. We were then guided away from the tree and had to try and guess what tree we had touched. This was quite difficult for some who kept their eyes closed ALL the time and had to go back to trees and touch them again to see what they remembered feeling.

We had to use our sight to find something in the forest that we thought would be nice in a picture frame. We managed to find a selection of interesting things with different textures, colours and even wildlife!

Our task was then to take the frame and find things from the forest to create a picture of our own. It was interesting to see the different materials that people found to include in their picture or the variety of leaves that were included.

Check in next time to discover what adventures we will be on during our third trip to the forest!

Discovering the great outdoors - part two!

TRIP ONE CONTINUED

To finish of our first day of discovery we went on a scavenger hunt. We worked in our groups to collect the different things on our list and took pictures at the end of all that we found. Many of us enjoyed this activity the most.

Discovering the great outdoors!

TRIP ONE
A very successful trip to the forest has been had and enjoyed by all of P2, P5 and the adults that were helping. We started by discovering a wild place and resting there for a while, listening and watching to see what was around us. This is the first stage that we have to complete for our John Muir award and some groups were lucky enough to hear some birds and spot a rabbit running by. We look forward to seeing what has changed in our wild place when we return next time.

SOME OF OUR WILD PLACES

We then became human cameras where we had to guide each other around with our eyes closed and when we found a nice picture to take the person with their eyes closed would open them for three seconds, take their picture and close their eyes again. This is a great way to take in all of your surroundings!
